Introducing Ronnie's Lates - a brand-new series of gigs taking the legendary energy of the Ronnie Scott’s Late Late Show out of Soho and into the beating heart of London’s grassroots music scene.

We’re bringing some of our favourite emerging musicians to the venues shaping the next generation of UK jazz, starting with Ronnie's Lates: South at Peckham Levels with Creature. + MADELEINE. Expect serious talent, close-up, no-filter performances, and the same unmistakable Ronnie’s spirit, just in a new postcode.

A Ronnie Scott’s Late Late Show regular, Creature. presents a fusion of club-ready jazz and broken beat, designed specifically for London dancefloors. Perhaps best known for his work as a session player for emerging artists like Yaya Bey and Cosmo Pyke, Creature. (AKA Jim Cornelissen) cites Yussef Dayes and Alfa Mist as influences, as well as footwork producer Machinedrum and Flying Lotus.

Creature. will be joined by emerging player in the nu-jazz and UK soul scene, MADELEINE is a singer, songwriter and producer taking influence from the progressive electronics of Flying Lotus and Kiefer, whilst showcasing the tuneful sensibilities of songwriters Lianne La Havas and Stevie Wonder. With support from BBC Radio 2, Jazz FM, and Wordplay, she’s also a celebrated session musician, touring the world as keyboardist for the likes of Olivia Dean, Nubiyan Twist, and Rachel Chinouriri.

Experience the future of UK jazz at NYJO’s monthly residency at Peckham Levels. This month drummer Jas Kayser joins as a special guest artist for a performance of original compositions with NYJO musicians.

Jas Kayser

Jas Kayser is sitting on top of the world. Sought after by great musicians from a myriad of musical worlds she is quite simply the musician’s musician. Her peers at the forefront of jazz music - a fierce proving ground - see her featured as both a lead and guest artist on radio, television and at music festivals across the globe.

From touring with Jorja Smith and organising her own ‘Jas & Chums’ European tour following the release of her debut EP “Jas 5ive’ in 2022, to joining Lenny Kravitz’s ‘Blue Electric Light’ world tour in 2024, Jas has been working hard while also behind the scenes creating new music to release into the world very soon!

A conscientious student, Jas, encouraged by her teachers – British jazz masters Julian Joseph, Byron Wallen and Tony Kofi – left London to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston. At Berklee she was inspired by her tutors, the drummers Terri Lynne Carrington and Ralph Peterson, and pianist Danilo Perez. After graduating Jas spent significant time absorbing the culture and sounds of Panama, at the behest of her Berklee mentor andPanamanian native, Danilo Perez. In this environment she learnt to deal with responsibility, teach, mentor and give back the eco system at the heart of her own developing musical ethos.

Jas’s own eclectic and versatile band ‘Jas and Chums’ has brought joy and energy to enthusiastic crowds, winning awards and prizes while being featured on television and radio. In 2024 Jas was nominated for The Composers Award, Up and Coming drummer for Modern Drummers Poll, and also the MOBO Best Jazz Act in 2022, having won both Jazz FM Breakthrough Act and Parliamentary Jazz New Comer in 2021. Her well crafted and explosive debut EP ‘Unforced Rhythm of Grace’ as well as her 2022 release ‘Jas 5ive’ have been championed by Jamie Cullum on BBC Radio 2, Julian Joseph on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 6’s Mary Anne Hobbs, Jazz FM and Jazzwise magazine.

Expect bold, original music, boundary-pushing improvisation from London’s top emerging jazz talent.

With collaboration, community, and creative expression at its heart, this residency will create a space where jazz lovers of all backgrounds are welcome.

This month, they will be celebrating the music of Township Jazz, paying tribute to icon Abdullah Ibrahim, led by Pete Letanka.

Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly known as Dollar Brand) is one of South Africa’s most important jazz musicians, embodying the deep spiritual and political essence of township jazz. Born in 1934 in Cape Town, he grew up surrounded by the rich musical traditions of the city's diverse communities—African choral music, Malay and Indian influences, gospel, and American jazz.

Township jazz, which evolved in South Africa under apartheid, became a unique and powerful genre blending traditional African rhythms, gospel harmonies, and the big-band energy of swing and bebop. It was both acelebration of cultural resilience and a protest against oppression, reflecting the struggles and hopes of Black South Africans. Ibrahim’s early recordings with The Jazz Epistles—a pioneering group that included Hugh Masekela—captured the joyous yet defiant energy of this music.

About NYJO:

Also known as the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, NYJO is an organisation dedicated to making jazz and creative music-making more accessible to early-career musicians, young people, and audiences across the country. Throughout our activity, we seek to create a meeting ground between the established and the experimental – the past, present, and future – to build bespoke programmes which cater to lifelong and new jazz fans.

Trinity Laban Shapeshifter Ensemble x Peckham Levels

Rule Breakers: The roaring twenties and creative pioneers.

America gave birth to jazz, but Paris was the first to hail it as an art.

The creative scene in 1920s and 1930s Paris brought together artists, musicians, dancers, costume designers and writers to form a community who pioneered the ground-breaking artistic developments that defined the twentieth century. From Picasso, Man Ray and Hemingway to Josephine Baker, Isadora Duncan, Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald, the city gave life shaped the modern age.

Musically, Igor Stravinsky is probably the best-known name – and personality – of the era, with his collaborations with Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes. HECTOR PLIMMER + B. HAWKSLEY

Dates: Saturday 7 June

Time: 7pm - 2am

Place: The Gig Space, Level 5

Access: There is step-free access via a lift

Long-time friends and collaborators Hector Plimmer and B. Hawksley join us for an evening of in-the-round performances to celebrate each of their respective new releases.

Renowned South London producer, drummer, DJ, and graphic artist Hector Plimmer celebrates the release of his new record "Infinity Mirrors" this year. Written, developed and reworked over the five years since his last LP, his new album explores a wide breadth of human experiences, from recognising love and yearning for loved ones far away, to tackling anxiety and learning to focus on the things that matter. It features an abundance of South London musical talent, including B. Hawksley herself, as well as the likes of Laura Misch, Andrew Ashong, Julia Biel, Tawiah and Marysia Osu.

Meanwhile B. Hawksley’s debut EP “I’ll Be Your Mirror” is her first collection of original music released after years of writing and featuring for other artists under alias Alexa Harley.

Expect an evening of darkly cinematic sounds alongside more upbeat, groove-heavy tracks and moments like a lullaby, made to sooth. These live performances will take listeners on a refreshing journey of slowly morphing sounds, progressing into a moving body of interweaving melodies and rhythms.

About Hector Plimmer:

Since the release of his debut album in 2017, Hector Plimmer has steadily built a career bridging musical worlds and genres, from beats to jazz, broken beat, house, and techno. His music has been championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Benji B, Lauren Laverne, Mary Anne Hobbs, Huey Morgan, Don Letts and Tom Ravenscroft, playlisted by BBC 6Music and supported by Mixmag, Resident Advisor, Crack, Hyponik, Fact and Stamp The Wax. The demand for his talents has also turned him into a prolific remixer, reworking tracks for household names such as Morcheeba and Red Snapper, and rising stars Oscar Jerome and Yazz Ahmed.

Hector Plimmer has collaborated on eclectic projects with the likes of Ego Ella May, Andrew Ashong, The London Symphony Orchestra, Emma-Jean Thackray, alongside his long-time collaborator, the late Matt Gordon. On stage, he has performed at Glastonbury, The Great Escape, Brainchild and London’s Jazz Café and more recently performed a special AI-centred show with Ben Hayes, closing a week-long residency at the Southbank’s Purcell Rooms. The latter was rated so highly by none-other-than Grace Jones, she requested the show be repeated at her long-postponed Meltdown Festival. As a DJ, Hector has been featured on ‘The Lab’ for Mixmag, and played for dancefloors alongside the likes of Gilles Peterson, Kutmah, Alexander Nut, MNDSGN, Onra, Dego, Kaidi Tatham.

About B. Hawksley:

In defining her sound, inspiration from across B. Hawksley’s life and relationships can be heard clearly. Songwriters like Jeff Buckley, Elliot Smith, Julia Jacklin, and Fleetwood Mac, to Greg Mendez, Jenny Lewis and Andy Shauf, provide a strong foundation from which she takes inspiration and projects her own musicality.

The “I’ll Be Your Mirror” EP explores themes of love from all angles; for the friends, family members and partners, in their successes and their faults. The release was produced by Alex Parish and earns its reflective name as B. Hawksley examines the role she plays in relationships and how that impacts those around her.

Under her Alexa Harley alias, B. Hawksley has provided topline vocals for drum and bass heavyweights including Hybrid Minds, Monrroe, Deadline and more, alongside features for the likes of Tom Misch, WEI, jacuzzi jefferson, poolsideconvo, El Train, and long-time friend and collaborator Hector Plimmer.

AXEL KANER-LIDSTROM + MARLA KETHER

Dates: Sunday 11 May

Time: 7pm - 11.30pm

Place: The Gig Space, Level 5

Access: There is step-free access via a lift

Two of the most exciting talents on the London jazz scene join us in Peckham for a night of dancefloor-focused, jazz-inflected sounds performed live and in the round.

Axel Kaner-Lidstrom is a trumpet player, bandleader, composer and director of London's epic Levitation Orchestra. A regular on the London jazz scene, Axel played with legendary US saxophonist Gary Bartz as part of leading UK spiritual jazz ensemble, Maisha, as well as touring internationally with the likes of Celeste.

Marla Kether is a bassist, producer and DJ. Exceeding 35 million Spotify streams as a session bassist, Marla released her highly-anticipated debut EP ‘All That We Have’ in November, championed by Crack Magazine, Jamz Supernova and many more. Her musical career is as diverse as her influences, with a unique blend of live percussion, Theo Parrish-style groove, and driving basslines and guitar riffs inspired by her West African heritage. The EP was heralded by Bandcamp Daily as some of ‘The Best Electronic Music of November 2023’, and the closing track ‘BTR2’ is one of DJ Mag’s Top Tracks of 2023.

“Marla Kether has to be one of the most exciting talents to emerge this year. She’s already well established as a successful session bassist, but her own productions are a revelation, joining house, disco, post-punk, and heavy doses of Afro-Brazilian groove into something completely her own.” - Bandcamp Daily

Axel & Marla's bands will include some of the best improvisers in the capital, including Levitation Orchestra's Plumm and James Akers, Javi Perez of Zurito and Cykada, plus Mark Mollison (Loyle Carner, Yazmin Lacey), James Wilson (King Krule) and Portuguese drumming sensation Zoe Pascal.
