Written and directed by Sofia Coppola in her directorial debut, The Virgin Suicides follows the story of a group of male friends in suburban Detroit in the 1970's who become obsessed with five mysterious sisters who are sheltered by their strict, religious parents.
Based on the 1993 novel by Jeffrey Eugenides and celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, The Virgin Suicides was met with praise from critics upon release, and today is widely regarded as a cult classic.
"The Virgin Suicides has become a shorthand for a kind of girlhood, one which is warmly lit, observed voyeuristically, and deceptively brutal." — Sophie Mackintosh, New Statesman
