SEED TALKS: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF CARL JUNG
Date: Tuesday 13 May
Times: 7pm - 9.30pm
Place: The Gig Space, Level 5
Access: There is step-free access via a lift
Have you ever wondered what our dreams and imagination can say about our inner psychology? Join Seed Talks for an illuminating introduction to the psychology of Carl Jung and his groundbreaking ideas about the creative, healing power of the unconscious.
A founding father of depth psychology, Jung was a maverick thinker, artist and visionary whose ideas were ahead of his time. His extensive studies of ancient religions and mythologies, alongside his deep dream work, brought him to the edge of sanity. Through this work, he developed the pioneering concepts of the collective unconscious, the archetypes (including the shadow and the self), synchronicity, individuation, creative self-realisation and more.
This talk will explore key Jungian concepts in relation to how Jung combined ancient Eastern wisdom with Western psychology. You’ll learn how this can be understood as a form of ‘sacred science’ reflecting the spiritual crisis of late-stage capitalism and how Jung’s thought places us inside a larger reality transcending space and time. We’ll look at the instrumental role of imagination, dreams and symbols in Jung’s approach to psychoanalysis, including his innovative technique of active imagination or ‘dreaming awake’. We’ll consider how Jung’s psychoanalysis is still relevant today as a powerful, transformative tool to access the unknown and facilitate creativity in support of both individual and collective growth.
Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!
Dr Rachel Newsome is a Jungian-based writer and teacher. She holds a doctorate in applying Jungian psychoanalysis to creative writing and is the founder of Depth Writing With Dr Rachel, a holistic creative learning programme aimed at supporting transformational growth. Dr Rachel has a background in the media and academia as a former editor of arts & culture magazine Dazed & Confused and a lecturer with twenty years’ experience, respectively. She is an Associate of the Higher Education Association and an Editorial Board Member of the London Arts-Based Research Centre. Her research has been published in international academic journals and she is Co-Editor of the forthcoming Routledge publication The Creative Psyche: Between Spirit and Matter. Her monthly Depth Writing With Dr Rachel dispatches on travels between worlds via the arts, culture and all things Jungian can be found on Substack.

SEED TALKS: THE NEUROSCIENCE OF MUSIC
Date: Tuesday 18 March
Times: 7pm - 9.30pm
Place: The Gig Space, Level 5
Access: There is step-free access via a lift
Ever wondered why music can be so powerful, causing deep emotional responses? Or why you can’t seem to get that song out of your head? In this talk, we will delve deep into the neuroscience of music, discovering how elements such as rhythm, pitch and timbre interact with our brains. A fascinating, yet often understated area of research, the neuroscience of music broadens our understanding of what music actually is, questioning why we respond to sounds in certain ways, and for what reason music is found in every society, across all corners of the globe. We will look at the many parts of the brain involved with music, from our memory to our speech processing and to our emotion and reward systems. We will explore the role of music in evolution, considering questions such as why we make and listen to music.
Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!
Dr Marcus Pearce is Reader in Cognitive Science at Queen Mary University of London, where he leads the Music Cognition Laboratory, and honorary Professor of Neuroscience at Aarhus University, Denmark, where he is part of the Centre for Music in the Brain. His research aims to understand the cognitive and brain mechanisms that underlie perception and appreciation of complex auditory phenomena such as music. He has given presentations at the Wellcome Collection and Royal Institution, run a Live Science residency at the Science Museum, and collaborated with the London Sinfonietta to produce a free iOS app for developing rhythm skills called Steve Reich's Clapping Music, described by the New York Times as "maddeningly addictive".

SEED TALKS: THE SCIENCE OF ADHD
Date: Tuesday 11 March
Times: 7pm - 9.30pm
Place: The Gig Space, Level 5
Access: There is step-free access via a lift
Join Seed Talks for this engaging talk about ADHD, exploring the neuroscience, symptoms, the positives, the struggles + much more. Followed by Q+A.
A simple scroll through Instagram or TikTok and you’ll be left questioning: do I have ADHD? The rise in ADHD in adults is undeniable. But only over the last decade has ADHD been formally recognised in the UK. It has been suggested that about 1.5 million adults in the UK have ADHD but only 120,000 have been diagnosed. Waiting times to access an adult ADHD specialist clinic in the NHS can be up to 2 years or more. It’s hard to find support and help.
From dopamine dips, hits and myths, how ADHD can present differently in women than men, and the neuroscience of neurodiversity; this talk is designed to give you an increased awareness and understanding of an ADHD brain. It will include advice and tips on how to navigate a neurotypical world as a neurodivergent person.
This talk will also highlight how society is demanding change. People are increasingly recognising and accepting neurodiversity and self-defining as neurodivergent. Surely, it’s time for the world to alter neurotypical societal standards as they are fast becoming outdated.
Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!

With Stella Duffy
A talk and workshop in creatively dreaming the final third of our lives.
More than 50% of us experience menopause. Like other major life changes such as puberty, pregnancy, infertility, menopause is rooted in the body, and experienced in the world.
A great deal of the recent focus on menopause has looked at the problematic aspects of this life change, but the transition into postmenopause also offers us a chance to imagine what else we want from our lives, how and who else we want to be.
Taking a creative and existential approach to menopause as a wakeup call to our ageing and mortality, psychotherapist and writer Stella Duffy will share her doctoral research on the embodied experience of postmenopause along with some gentle and inclusive creative exercises designed to help us consider what we want next - and how to get there.
Bring pen, paper, possibility.

How can a new typeface be designed to capture the flavour of a city? Join us for an inspirational talk that celebrates the incredibly rich connection between type and place.
From road signs to shop windows, letters in the public space play a vital role in the perception of the identity of our cities. A new typeface can be inspired by the heritage of a place and its community, and in turn comes to represent their visual character to the eyes of the world. From vernacular to institutional, from physical to digital… through different languages and writing systems.
With creative director Riccardo De Franceschi, we will look at selected project case studies that explore the relationship between type, place and culture, through Dalton Maag’s work both with place brands and retail.
Dalton Maag was founded in 1991, and designs high quality fonts and logos for its clients. With bases in London and Brazil, the company now employs 45 people from 25 countries, (speaking 14 languages) and handles a wide variety of projects with a range of budgets and timescales. With clients based and operating both locally and internationally, a speciality of Dalton Maag is an expertise in non-Latin scripts, including Devanagari, Arabic and Cyrillic.

Join type design studio Dalton Maag for an interactive session to unlock the power of letter forms.
This workshop is designed to provide an introduction to the world of typefaces from the point of view of the type design studio. It involves theoretical and practical elements around both type design and typography, based on Dalton Maag's experiences working with brands large and small.
How can we shape letter forms into a style that evokes the emotional reaction we want to achieve? How do scale and context impact design decisions behind accessible letter forms? The workshop will answer these and other questions, key to designing and choosing type.
You will be drawing by hand with pencil on tracing paper, in a group of design enthusiasts. You’ll be able to review and discuss with the Dalton Maag team, and your fellow attendees. No specific level of proficiency with drawing is required, other than a love for type.

Here at Dopereaders, one of our primary goals is ensuring Black and POC authors receive adequate resonance and distribution opportunities.
We do so by liaising with some of the best publishers and independent authors out there and working to help their voices be heard.
We will be collaborating with Fatboys On Tour - a Black-owned dinner & Peckham Levels to hold The pop-up Black Book fair, with books from a variety of incredibly talented and versed authors, which we believe will bring a powerful insight into the experience and backgrounds of the Black and POC community.
Come with friends & family and take a look and note some of the awesome titles available.
We will also be holding a Q&A, and book signing with Celine Saintclair author of Sugar Baby from 5pm-6pm.
