Beyond the Bike - Adventure Cycling Panel Discussion, Film Night and Q&A

Beyond the Bike presents a night of adventure cycling: film screenings, practical tips and all your questions answered by an expert panel.

What does it take to step outside your comfort zone and set off on an adventure? Whether it’s crossing countries, traversing mountain ranges, taking on an ultra cycling event, or setting off on your first overnighter, bike adventures open up a world of challenge and possibilities.

Join Bella Molloy, host of the Seek Travel Ride podcast, and explorer Jude Kriwald for a special live event in London on May 14 and 15! Each night will bring together a different line-up of past podcast guests, sharing their incredible adventure cycling experiences. Choose one night or come to both - each show offers new stories, insights, and inspiration!

The evening will include a panel discussion, film screening, and an audience Q&A, where we’ll share stories, practical advice, and insights from the road.

What to Expect:

  • Stories from adventure cyclists - our panelists bring with them a diverse range of experiences when it comes to bike adventures. Some have cycled across the world over multiple years, others have raced across the continent in ultra cycling events such as the Transcontinental and Trans Pyrenees

  • The realities of bike travel - practical advice on navigating the highs and lows, from wild camping and dealing with unexpected challenges.

  • Solo female travel insights - hearing firsthand experiences from women who’ve ridden solo through unfamiliar landscapes and cultures.

  • Alone Across Gola film screening - this award winning film showcases panelist Jude Kriwald’s impressive bike adventure deep into the jungle of Liberia.

  • A live audience Q&A - your opportunity to ask the panelists anything about their journeys, the gear they used, how they planned their routes, as well as gaining advice for your own bike travel.

Whether you’re curious about bikepacking, interested in taking a long-distance cycle tour, training for your own ultra race, or just love hearing real adventure travel stories, this is your chance to connect with a community of like-minded people and be inspired to take your own bike adventures.

“60 SECONDS, ONE MIC, THE AUDIENCE ARE THE SPEAKERS !!! I HAD SO MUCH FUN LAST NIGHT I NEARLYYYY CRIEDDDDD !!!” – @lemelp

“Wow wow wow. Last night was so so magical. @SpecialGuestLDN has literally changed my view on community and our generation. If you stop to listen to people you can be so inspired.” – @afrocreative

“Such a simple idea but inspiring: emotional, hilarious, motivational & genuinely hopeful.” – @RobinSkyer

"Completely unforgettable. I almost didn't go because I thought it was a 'spoken word' night... it wasn't that at all." – @ruthlssmusic

Huh?

Special Guest is the open mic night where anything goes. Anyone can take the stage to share anything for 60 seconds. Expect creative talks, shower thoughts, true stories, hidden talents, deep and meaningfuls, and much more.

 How it works:

  • Listen, clap, cheer. Support your fellow special guests.

  • Sit back, listen, and enjoy the ride.

  • If you want to, you can take the mic to share anything for 60 seconds. It's optional.

Previously, members of the audience have taken the mic to… share their grandmother’s wisdom, say what they wish they’d said to their ex, dance, announce a surprise holiday, apologise to their vagina, play the nose flute, pun on command, ask for a hug, reveal a tattoo of Phil Mitchell, share their life motto, fulfil their dream to crowdsurf, source baby name suggestions, observe a minute of silence, form a human pyramid, serenade the audience, thank their dad, hand out free plantain, and much more.

MIDGITTE BARDOT’S PERSONAL SPOT

Dates: Thursday 22 May, 19 June

Doors open: 7.30pm - 10pm

Place: The Gig Space, Level 5

Access: There is step-free access via a lift

Our regular night to showcase work from the cutting edge of London's underground performance and art scene is back for another beautiful, messy and full-throated season of entertainment.

Don’t miss the all-singing, sometime-dancing, spirited chaos of Midgitte Bardot and some special guests from the worlds of Live Art, dance, drag, music, and radical hoo-ha.

Midgitte - the hilarious, subversive drag alter-ego of the supremely talented performance artist Tamm Reynolds - has been performing across the UK cabaret, live art, drag, theatre and club spaces since 2016. Midgitte Bardot’s Personal Spot is an evening of drag, performance art, radical weird stuff, liberation from today’s costly world, and a place for performance to buffer and polish.

The show is Midgitte attempting to find herself whilst entertaining you most of the while. Then acts from the city and beyond (amusing you, titillating some, confounding and shaking others to their core).

Thursday 22 May line-up:

It may be our second season, but the team at Midgitte Bardot’s Personal Spot is still all about bringing you serious talent. Nothing sophomoric about this lot. You’re in for a good one.

SAMRA MAYANJA

Samra Mayanja is an artist-writer obsessed with language, humour, and the illegibility of the body. She is interested in the residue from translations between writing, drawing, film, and performance. Her practice is heavily supported by the instability of these translations and how the limits of each medium give life to the next. Samra’s performances blend physical theatre, sexy-gone-sour slapstick, and poetic monologues, often featuring tender vocal improvisations honed through work with experimental ensembles.

She has performed and exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries and theatres, including Cambridge Junction, The Oval, Centre for Live Art in Yorkshire, Somerset House, Tetley (Leeds), MAMA (Rotterdam), Kampnagel (Hamburg), Transmediale (Berlin) and LIVE Biennale (Vancouver). Samra writes weekly on her Substack P3RFORMANC3 PRINC3SS.

SELINA BONELLI

selina is a neurodiverse non binary artist currently exploring abandoned post-conflict architecture through performance and sound. They often work with found objects and hand me downs and is  interested in how our bodies make sense of things that are unspeakable, uncommunicable.

They explore the spaces outside of language by expanding on a listening through what touch could be to uncover the resonances trapped in ruins, utterances and hauntings.

" i will not have the words for a type of loss that is so distant it is intimate." ALOK from funeral in Femme in Public.

CYRO

Cyro is a punk vocalist, drag king/thing and trans powerhouse who brings strength, beauty and awareness to the stage. Cyro roots his work in the LGBTQIA+ community and draws from queer ancestors within his practice.

Fixture of the London drag and cabaret scene and current co-host of @manupldn, Cyro has performed everywhere from Shakespeare’s Globe to Cambridge Junction to Manchester Pride, and toured up and down the country with Fantabulosa! (a pioneering drag show for young people, 2018-19). Beyond that, he is an actor and is currently touring as part of @betnlevtheatre Remythed (2024-25).

Start time: 7.30pm

Space: The Auditorium

Access: There is step-free access via a lift

We’re thrilled to welcome Deeper Into Movies back to Peckham Levels for more expertly curated screenings of cult classics, overlooked gems and important contemporary cinema.

An expert observer of unembellished humanity, writer-director Mike Leigh reached new levels of expressive power and intricacy with this exploration of the deceptions, small and large, that shape our relationships.

When Hortense (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), a black optometrist who was adopted as a child, begins the search for her birth mother, she doesn’t expect that it will lead her to Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn, winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s best actress award), a lonely white factory worker whose tentative embrace of her long-lost daughter sends shock waves through the rest of her already fragile family.

Born from a painstaking process of rehearsal and improvisation with a powerhouse ensemble cast, Secrets & Lies is a Palme d’Or–winning tour de force of sustained tension and catharsis that lays bare the emotional fault lines running beneath everyday lives.

Stripped for Transport is a curation of archival footage from Mark’s last winter and summer spent in Lebanon before moving to London and co-edited with Zsowe to present images from places that no longer exist, not in the way they used to.

Thoughts stripped from the possibility of finding answers to the questions of death, faith and one’s violated access to time and space are met with a score that invokes fear, loss, and a sense of madness.

This is Mark’s first non-academic production, working with Zsowe (Zoe Krynicki and Harmony Vergara) towards an attempt at a cognition of the present social-historical moment and the already visible signs of decay all around.

THE THINGS

Dates: 25 & 26 January

Performance times: 1pm & 4pm

Place: The Auditorium, Levels 5 & 6

Access: There is step-free access via a lift

The latest in Poltergeist Theatre’s immersive London performances, The Things is a clown theatre show for family audiences, inspired by the historical objects uncovered by archaeologists.

The Things are two creatures who have happily lived in the dusty archives of history for, well, nobody knows how long. They dig through the ancient mud of the city, collect their favourite things, and that’s that. But then one day, their treasures of history begin to speak back...

It turns out every object has its own tale to tell.

Join The Things on a journey through time, as they unlock stories that have been buried for centuries. They’ll come across mud-wrestling skeletons, a choir of buried trees, a villainous snail, and much more...

So what are you waiting for? Grab a spade, dig into the dirt, and become part of the fun. By getting lost in the past, what might we learn about ourselves today?

The Things follows hot on the heels of Poltergeist’s acclaimed festive family shows, and is a collaboration between Poltergeist Theatre and MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology), connecting families with archeological finds through interactive comedy performance.

Praise for Poltergeist’s Alice in Wonderland:

★★★★★ “A perfect family show” All That Dazzles

★★★★★ “Perfect for all ages... captured the whole audience” Afridiziak

★★★★★ “A breath-taking instant classic for the London festive season” The Spy in the Stalls

Praise for other Poltergeist shows:

★★★★ “Best shows of the Fringe” The Guardian

★★★★ “Brilliantly inventive” The Stage

A jolt of adrenaline shot straight to the heart of 1990s British cinema, this darkly funny adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel was a major breakthrough for director Danny Boyle, producer Andrew Macdonald, and screenwriter John Hodge.

With live-wire energy and stylistic verve, Trainspotting bounces across the life and times of Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor), a Scottish heroin addict who, along with his misfit mates, gets high, gets in trouble, gets clean, and gets high again, all in a bid to outrun the banality of modern existence.

We’re thrilled to welcome Deeper Into Movies back to Peckham Levels for more expertly curated screenings of cult classics, overlooked gems and important contemporary cinema.

Rising J-pop star Mima quits singing to pursue a career as an actress and model — but her fans aren’t ready to see her go. When she takes on a recurring role in a popular television detective show, her handlers and collaborators suddenly start turning up murdered, and Mima begins to lose herself — and her mind — in her role. Harboring feelings of guilt, haunted by visions of her former life, and hunted by a stalker who grows ever nearer, Mima will succumb to a frenzied paranoia that blurs reality and fantasy in this surreal animated psychological thriller.

Based on a novel by Yoshikazu Takeuchi, animation visionary Kon’s feature debut is a justly lauded, mind-bending journey into the snares of fatal fame that will keep you off-balance right up to the unbelievable, gory climax.

Dates: Thursday 19 September

Start time: 7.30pm

Space: The Auditorium

Access: There is step-free access via a lift

Written and directed by Sofia Coppola in her directorial debut, The Virgin Suicides follows the story of a group of male friends in suburban Detroit in the 1970's who become obsessed with five mysterious sisters who are sheltered by their strict, religious parents.

Based on the 1993 novel by Jeffrey Eugenides and celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, The Virgin Suicides was met with praise from critics upon release, and today is widely regarded as a cult classic.

"The Virgin Suicides has become a shorthand for a kind of girlhood, one which is warmly lit, observed voyeuristically, and deceptively brutal." — Sophie Mackintosh, New Statesman

Bad Gal Film Club is a community dedicated to championing women in cinema both on and off screen. The mission is simple: we’re passionate about amplifying women’s voices, and strive to build a community of film lovers who have an interest in women-centric cinema.

For some people, it’s their first time ever speaking in front of a crowd, which makes it even more meaningful and memorable for them. For others, it’s an opportunity to try out their creative juices, and see how a crowd reacts to their story, their comedy, their poetry, or their spoken word.
